Gaming Courses | Howard Community College

Why not turn your pastime into a career?

Gaming, while bigger than ever, has gone way beyond simple entertainment. This program will enable you to learn development principles to design the next generation of games that will be also used in education, business, medicine, and even national security. Designed for those who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in game design, HCC’s curriculum is a smart, economical way to get started.

This curriculum is designed as a guide for students planning to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree in game design, simulation, or digital entertainment. Students are advised to check the requirements of the institution to which they intend to transfer.

The main emphasis in the Gaming and Simulation Development area of study is the development of fundamental principles, conceptual abilities, and technical skills in visual art, game and simulation design and production, demonstrated in a student’s transfer portfolio.

As a graduate, you should be able to:

  1. Identify, understand, evaluate, and apply ethical reasoning as it applies to game design and simulation.
  2. Develop and demonstrate self-confidence, motivation, open-mindedness, risk-taking, and insight as it applies to the digital arts.
  3. Demonstrate mastery of the tools for creating and outputting game and simulation designs, to include hardware requirements, software requirements, cloud-based workflows, game scripting, and industry trends.
  4. Describe, analyze, and effectively apply the foundational principles of game and simulation design to include character personas, character artwork, backgrounds, environments, and interface design.
