B.S. Computer Science

In a world going through dramatic change, the field of computer information science
stands at the center of change, designing, creating and maintaining the technology
and the systems that are central to the way the world works. Whether it’s e-commerce,
information retrieval via the World Wide Web, financial transactions at a local bank,
or rockets blasting into space, computer scientists and information specialists are
responsible for the hardware and software systems used for these endeavors. And although
the changes in the world seem chaotic, there is calm at the center of the turmoil
where the computer scientist and information specialist proceed methodically using
the tools of industry, logic and mathematics and an evolving engineering discipline
to shape this new world being built. At Clarion, we have faculty who have many years
of real world experience and many years of teaching and sharing that experience with
students. Students develop software for a variety of computing platforms including
mainframe and personal computers and the networks linking them together. Software
experience includes C#, Java and others. At Clarion, the CIS student gets the full
attention of the faculty who are in the classroom and in the labs helping the students
learn. There is a dramatic need for people to come join the ranks of the professionals
that are quietly changing the world. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.

B.S. Computer Science: Cybersecurity Concentration

Employment of information security analysts is projected to grow 31 percent from 2019
to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics. As malicious cyberattacks, cyberfraud, cybercrime, and cyberwarfare
become more and more prevalent, the demand for cybersecurity professionals has grown
in business (particularly for banks and financial institutions), as well as for the
government. This cybersecurity concentration gives students experience with core concepts
in cybersecurity, cyberforensics, network security, and security management, while
also teaching the fundamentals of computer science needed to succeed in many other
programming and technology-related industries. This program is offered only at the
Clarion campus.

B.S. Computer Science: Game Programming Concentration

Computer science with a concentration in game programming gives students experience
with core concepts of game development, such as game engines and how to create games
within them, while also teaching the fundamentals of computer science needed to succeed
in many other programming and technology related industries. This program is offered
at the Clarion campus.

B.S. Computer Science: Robotics Programming Concentration

The B.S. computer science degree with a concentration in robotics programming gives
students experience with central concepts in robotics programming, robotics manufacturing
algorithms, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing,
while also teaching the fundamentals of computer science needed to succeed in many
other programming and technology related industries. This program is offered only
at the Clarion campus.

B.S. Information Systems

A B.S. in information systems might best be described as preparing the student to
become experts in the use of the computer as a key component used in complex systems
that solve problems in the business world. Courses include programming, applications
of microcomputers, data communications, systems analysis, networking and database
systems. The primary programming languages are C# and Java. Information systems is
a business-oriented computing curriculum. Students study the use and programming of
computers in a business environment so some of the required courses will be taken
in the business school including accounting, management, marketing, finance and economics.
This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.

Minor in Computer Science

A minor in computer science provides students in other fields of study with a solid
knowledge of computers and their applications. The minor is designed to assist students
in gaining employment and coping with the rapid changes in technology that are affecting
and will continue to affect both their personal and professional lives. This program
is offered only at the Clarion campus.

Requirements

Minor in Data Analytics

The minor in data analytics is designed to provide students with an understanding
of the technologies and methodologies necessary for storing and accessing large amounts
of structured and unstructured data to solve real problems. It is aimed at students
who wish to become data scientists and analysts in finance, marketing and management,
but could also be applied to medical or physical science research and other areas
that consume large amounts of data. Students will gain the necessary technical and
quantitative skills and experience with modern software tools for a career in data
analytics. The curriculum emphasizes technical proficiency and practical experience,
and provides students with skills in database processing, data warehousing, data mining,
and data visualization to meet the challenge of solving Big Data problems. This program
is offered at the Clarion campus and online.
